The “Pre-Mario Maker” Sandbox
Long before Nintendo officially released Super Mario Maker, the homebrew community created Mario Craft DS. Developed by a user simply known as “Nobody,” this project was a hybrid between a level editor and a sandbox game. While it bears the “Craft” name, it is not a 3D Minecraft clone (like DScraft), but rather a 2D construction tool that allows players to draw levels tile-by-tile and play them instantly.
Key Features
- Touch Screen Building: Players use the DS stylus to paint terrain, place blocks, and position enemies on a grid. The interface was crude but functional, allowing for rapid level creation on the go.
- Minecraft Influence: Unlike a standard level editor, the game allowed for “sandbox” style manipulation where you could destroy and replace blocks in real-time during gameplay, blurring the line between editing and playing.
- Legacy: It is often confused with New Super Minecraft Bros (a texture hack of NSMB) or DScraft (a 3D Minecraft homebrew), but Mario Craft DS stands alone as one of the first attempts to bring “Make it, Play it” gameplay to a Nintendo handheld.
