A Pixel Art Platformer Built on Classic SNES Feel

Paintra is a 2D action-platformer built in GameMaker Studio with a pixel art style. Think SNES-era Mario World, the springy physics and charm of Mr. Gimmick, Sunsoft tight game feel, and the quiet strangeness of Trip World. It plays like a classic SNES platformer with a modern hand behind it.

The Boomerang

Your primary tool is the boomerang. Charge it up for longer throws, ride it mid-air as a shuttle to cross gaps, or use it as a grapple tether to swing from walls and ledges. The full movement toolkit also includes wall jumps, dashes, rolls, ground pounds, gliders, ladders, pipes, and trampolines.

Worlds

Five distinct worlds, each with a unique pixel art visual theme and handcrafted levels:

  • Watercolour Hills – the bright, grassy starting world
  • Faithful Forest – a lush wooded area with denser layouts
  • Dusty Desert – open, sun-baked stages with environmental hazards
  • Lakeview Park – water-adjacent levels with vertical traversal
  • Underground Caverns – tight, dark cave stages with secret-heavy layouts

Roughly 20 or more levels across all worlds, with unique secrets and three hidden P-coins to find in each one.

Hub World

Between stages, you return to a central hub world. Talk to NPCs scattered throughout, and spend coins at the gacha machine to unlock hats for your character. New hats keep trickling out as you progress.

Enemies and Bosses

A varied roster of robots, slimes, and other creatures, each with distinct movement patterns. Every world leads to a boss fight with its own mechanics and phase structure.

  • Dialogue system with NPC conversations and tutorial tips throughout
  • Save system with multiple slots, settings, and iris-wipe level transitions

Status

Paintra is in active development by Anthony Micallef. Core systems are complete and stable. New levels, enemies, and bosses are being added. Release is targeting late 2026.
