Getting Started
This guide is for Installing the Homebrew Channel on your Nintendo Wii. This guide covers 2 methods. The first does not require an SD card but does require an internet connection. While the second one does not require an internet connection but does require an SD card.
Method 1: DNS Exploit (No SD Card)
Requirements:
1. You must have your Wii connected to the internet.
2. For the Homebrew version you'll need an SD card.
If you are unsure about how to set up the Internet, all you will need to do is go to Wii options then System Settings, then move one right and select Internet. Select Connection Settings, From there you can select what connection you would like to use, and click a wireless connection (or wired). Select search for the access point, select the network, and enter your Wi-Fi password.
Step 1: Configure DNS
1. Go to Wii Options > Wii Settings > Internet > Connection Settings.
2. Select your current connection and choose 'Change Settings'.
3. Scroll right to 'Auto-Obtain DNS' and select 'No'.
4. Select 'Advanced Settings'.
5. Enter the following IP for BOTH Primary and Secondary DNS: 18.188.135.9
6. Select 'Confirm', then 'Save'. The Wii will perform a connection test.
7. When asked to perform a system update, select 'No' (unless your system is below version 4.3).
Step 2: Trigger the Exploit
Go back to the Internet menu, select 'User Agreements', and select 'Yes'.
If you see a blue screen with a pony, everything should be working correctly. Just wait a bit. If your Wii remote disconnects just power off your console and try again. After a while, text will start to appear. If you see a disclaimer screen, press 1 to continue when prompted.
Step 3: Install Homebrew Channel
1. You are now in the HackMii Installer. Press 'Continue'.
2. Move your cursor up to 'Install the Homebrew Channel' and select it.
3. Confirm by selecting 'Yes, continue'.
4. Once it says 'SUCCESS', press 'Continue' and then 'Exit'.
5. You will be returned to the Homebrew Channel! Modification complete.
Method 2: LetterBomb (SD Card)
For this method, you will need a Nintendo Wii and SD card that is no more than 32GB in size (FAT32 formatted). This does NOT require an internet connection on the Wii itself.
Step 1: Get MAC Address
On your Wii, go to the Wii Button then Wii Settings. Select Internet and go to Console Information and make note of your MAC address.
Step 2: Download LetterBomb
1. On a computer, visit the LetterBomb site (button below).
2. Select your System Menu version (e.g. 4.3U).
3. Input your Wii MAC address.
4. Complete the CAPTCHA and ensure 'Bundle the HackMii Installer for me!' is checked.
5. Click 'Cut the red wire' (or blue).
Step 3: Transfer Files
A zip file will be downloaded. Unzip the files. Insert your SD Card into your computer and drag and drop the folders inside the letterbomb folder (the 'private' folder and 'boot.elf') to the ROOT of your SD card. Eject the SD card and insert it into your Wii.
Step 4: Launch Exploit
Power on your system. Go into the Wii Message Board and navigate back to 'Yesterday' or 'Two days ago'. Look for a Red Envelope with a bomb inside. Click it.
Text will start to appear. Just wait. When the disclaimer appears, press 1 to continue.
Step 5: Install
Follow the same steps as Method 1:
1. Press Continue.
2. Install The Homebrew Channel > Yes, continue.
3. Exit.
If your Homebrew Channel is empty, don't worry as this is normal. You now just have to load apps onto your SD Card (in the 'apps' folder).
