The “Perfect” Fan Remake
Released on August 6, 2016, to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary, AM2R is widely considered one of the most professional fan games ever created. Developed over ten years by Milton Guasti, it reimagined the Game Boy classic Metroid II with the fast-paced physics of Metroid: Zero Mission. Although Nintendo issued a DMCA takedown just days after release, the project’s quality helped Guasti land a professional level design job at Moon Studios (creators of Ori and the Will of the Wisps).
Key Features
- Modernized Physics: Replaces the “floaty” controls of the Game Boy original with the tight, snappy movement of the GBA titles. It adds modern mechanics like the Speed Booster, Power Grip (ledge grabbing), and directed diagonal aiming.
- Expanded World: While faithful to the original map structure, AM2R adds entirely new areas such as the “Distribution Center” and “Hydro Station,” along with new bosses like The Tester and an expanded Torizo fight.
- Logbook System: Inspired by Metroid Prime, players can scan enemies and environments to unlock lore entries, adding narrative depth to the silence of SR388.
- Community Updates (v1.5+): Following the shutdown, the community took over the source code, adding widescreen support, high-quality soundtracks, and massive content patches that the original developer could not finish.
Game Modes
- Fusion Difficulty: A brutal difficulty mode where Samus wears the Fusion Suit. Organic enemies spawn “X Parasites” when defeated (which must be absorbed for health/ammo), and bosses have new “Core-X” second phases.
- New Game+: Unlocked after beating the game, this mode removes certain lava restrictions, allowing players to explore the world in a non-linear order and sequence break without glitches.
- Random Game+: A fully integrated “Randomizer” that shuffles item locations across the map. It includes logic checks to prevent soft-locks, ensuring the game remains beatable every time.
