Paper Mario: ReCut Brings The N64 RPG To Windows Through Static Recompilation

Paper Mario is the latest Nintendo 64 classic to get the static recompilation treatment. Paper Mario: ReCut version 0.1.1 has been released by SmokeyMcGames, also known as SMCGames, giving Windows players an early way to run the original RPG outside a standard N64 emulator.

The distinction is important here: this is not an official Nintendo release, and it should not be confused with a normal commercial PC port. ReCut is a Windows-focused static recompilation project. It relies on the modern N64 recompilation scene, uses RT64 for rendering, and requires users to supply their own legally dumped Paper Mario (U) ROM before the game can be set up locally.

What Paper Mario: ReCut Is

Paper Mario: ReCut turns the original N64 game into a Windows-native recompilation while keeping copyrighted game data out of the download. The public repository does not ship with Nintendo’s ROM, extracted assets, save files, or generated output made from the ROM. Instead, the first-run setup checks the user’s own copy of Paper Mario (U) and stores what it needs in that user’s local folder.

According to ReCollect64, the expected ROM is a Paper Mario (U) .z64 dump with the MD5 hash A722F8161FF489943191330BF8416496. The Japanese Mario Story ROM is not currently supported as far as the release notes indicate.

Early Features

The first public build already has a few useful PC-facing options. Players can access a menu with F1, use a windowed RT64 renderer, change graphics settings while the app is running, and begin configuring keyboard or controller input. Known SDL controllers can be detected automatically, while the broader rebinding system is still being worked on.

The texture side of the project may be the most interesting long-term feature. ReCut can dump textures from the current scene, watch for newly loaded textures during play, and reload replacement textures while the game is running. The bundled Paper Atlas Tool is there to help organize those dumped pieces into something artists can actually edit, which could make future texture packs and visual experiments much easier to build.

4:3 For Now, Widescreen Later

For now, the intended play path is still 4:3. Widescreen appears in the options, but the developer notes currently warn that it is not working properly and can cause visual problems. So yes, ReCut can run Paper Mario on PC now, but it is not yet the polished widescreen build some players might picture when they hear “PC version.”

That distinction matters. A recompilation can become the foundation for PC-style enhancements, including widescreen, higher resolutions, texture replacement, improved controls, and quality-of-life features. But those features still have to be implemented and tested by the developers. Native PC execution does not automatically mean full modern PC feature support on day one.

Save States Need Caution

Save states also need a warning label in this release. ReCut has an early snapshot system that stores slots locally under user/states/, but the current notes say using save states can break the game. For now, it is better to leave that feature alone until a future update stabilizes it.

That makes this first release exciting, but clearly early. The game boots, the renderer is in place, and the texture tooling is already part of the package, but players should expect rough edges while the project matures. Texture bugs, crashes, or progression issues are all possible at this stage.

A Big Recompilation Milestone

Even with those warnings, this is a big moment for N64 recompilation. Paper Mario is one of the system’s most beloved RPGs, and a native Windows recompilation gives the community a new foundation for texture work, accessibility improvements, modding, display options, and other upgrades that are harder to handle through a conventional emulator setup.

If you want to try it, head to the SMCGames GitHub page, read the setup notes carefully, and make sure you are using your own legally dumped ROM. You can also check out ReCollect64’s coverage of the project here. As with most first public releases, the sensible move is to treat ReCut as a promising project to test carefully now and revisit as new versions land.
