About the Game

The “Hello Mario Engine” Sandbox

Before Nintendo officially released Super Mario Maker on the Wii U, the fan community relied on tools like Mario Editor. Created by the prolific developer Hello Fangaming, this project is a standalone application built on the famous “Hello Mario Engine.” It grants players access to the engine’s massive library of thousands of items, enemies, and power-ups without requiring any coding knowledge, effectively serving as a “Make Your Own Game” kit for the PC.

Key Features

  • Massive Asset Library: Because it is based on the Hello Mario Engine, it includes obscure power-ups and enemies from across the franchise’s history—such as the Ice Flower, Propeller Mushroom, and even the Billy Gun—that official “Maker” games often skip.
  • Style Mixing: Unlike Nintendo’s restrictive “Themes,” Mario Editor allows you to mix and match sprites. You can have a Super Mario World Bowser fight in a Super Mario Bros. 3 airship using Super Mario Galaxy music, all in the same level.
  • The “Showcase”: The game comes with a dedicated “Showcase” application that allows players to package their levels and share them with others. While it lacks an online server browser, the community shared “Level Packs” that could be loaded instantly.
  • Legacy & Successor: While development on Mario Editor ceased in 2019, it paved the way for Hello’s modern successor, the Hello Mario Framework (Unity), which brings this same “easy editing” philosophy to fully 3D Mario games.
