About the Game

Mario Multiverse, rebuilt from the ground up

Mario Multiverse is a fan-made Mario maker: a 2D platformer with a full level editor, dozens of game styles, costumes, and a community that has built hundreds of stages over the years. Multiverse Revival is a fan project that rebuilds the whole game as a clean, modern C++ engine and brings every released version together into one.

Multiverse Revival is a fan project and is not affiliated with Nintendo.

What is new and better than the original

  • Every version in one game. The 2019 release, version 7.8 and Demo 2.1 each had content the others did not. The revival loads all of it, so levels, styles and costumes from every version live side by side.
  • Play and editor in one app. The original split the game, the level editor and the settings into three separate programs. The revival puts them together, and test-play jumps from the editor into your level and back with one key.
  • Built for modern screens. HD textures, a sharp interface at any resolution, Original, Fill and Large view sizes, VSync, and smooth motion on high refresh rate monitors.
  • Gamepad support out of the box.
  • A Levels hub for your own levels and the built-in ones, a theme menu with live previews, and stage packs you can play in order with lives and score carried over.
  • New extras that no original build has, like slopes and a costume of Tomataro from Paintra, always labelled as part of the revival.
  • Cross-platform. Windows today, with macOS, Linux and Android (with touch controls) planned.

Offline first. No DRM, no bans.

Multiverse Revival runs fully offline. There is no DRM, no account to create, no always-online check, and nothing that can lock you out or ban you. When the revival server arrives, online features like sharing, rating and downloading levels will be optional, and they only switch on if you turn them on. Levels you download stay on your PC.

What already works

  • All 631 levels load and play, with all 34 game styles
  • Mario’s running, jumping and swimming, rebuilt to feel like the original, with Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World style physics
  • The full level editor: original layout, the complete object palette, sub-stages, multi-select and undo
  • Around 160 costumes through the Mystery Mushroom
  • Challenge Mode with a local leaderboard
  • Sound and music

What is coming next

  • Luigi, Toad and Peach as playable characters
  • The rest of the enemies (about 20 of 60 are in) and power-ups such as the Super Leaf, Tanooki and Frog suits
  • Doors, keys, warp zones, auto-scroll, water and lava layers
  • The optional revival server for sharing, rating and downloading levels
  • macOS, Linux and Android builds
  • More extras, such as world maps
