About the Game
75 Players, One Princess
Super Mario Royale (later rebranded to “Infringio Royale” after Nintendo’s DMCA) was a browser-based battle royale that pit 75 players against each other in classic SMB1 levels. Created by YouTuber and developer InfernoPlus, it became a viral sensation in June 2019 before Nintendo’s legal team shut it down within days.
Key Features
- 75-Player Races: All players start World 1-1 simultaneously. You can see other players as “ghosts” racing alongside you in real-time. First to the flagpole wins the round.
- Limited Lives: One hit and you’re out. Fall into a pit? Spectate mode. Get touched by a Goomba? Watch from the sidelines as others race to victory.
- Chaos Items: Picking up certain power-ups spawns extra enemies for *everyone* or adds obstacles to the course, turning every run into controlled pandemonium.
- Browser-Based: No downloads required—just open the website and race against the world. The simplicity was key to its viral explosion.
The DMCA and Revival
Nintendo issued a cease-and-desist within days of its viral success. InfernoPlus responded by rebranding with original assets as “Infringio Royale” and later “DMCA Royale,” which remains playable today with new characters and levels.
