Pokemon Gaia by Spherical Ice is consistently ranked among the top GBA Pokemon ROM hacks for its high production quality and complete original story. Set in the Orbtus region, the hack follows a player investigating ancient ruins while an archaeological society uncovers something threatening. The writing is noticeably stronger than most fan games in the genre.
The mechanic set is modernised beyond FireRed: Pokemon from Generations 1 through 6 are catchable, the physical and special split is implemented, Fairy type is present, and moves from later generations have been backported. Mega Evolution is available for select Pokemon.
Gaia requires a FireRed ROM to patch against. It is one of the most recommended entry points for people new to Pokemon ROM hacking because it plays and feels like a polished official release.
