A Mario Game Has Been Removed From the Nintendo Switch eShop

If you were hoping to pick up a copy of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 for the Switch, your only option now is the physical route, as the game has been delisted from all digital storefronts, Nintendo eShop included.

Another One Bites the Dust

While SEGA announced that the game has been delisted, no specific reason for the removal was given. However, speculation strongly points toward licensing expirations. Many licensed sports titles, especially those tied to specific world events like the Olympics, have limited-term agreements for the use of official logos, music, and branding.

The Event That Never (Technically) Happened

There’s a certain irony to this delisting. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was released to celebrate the 2020 games–an event that, as we all know, was delayed to 2021 due to the global pandemic. In many ways, the game itself became a digital time capsule of an event that technically never took place as scheduled.

Now, just as the physical world has moved on, the digital storefront is closing its doors on this piece of history. If you’re a collector of these “lost” events, you might want to hunt down a physical cartridge before those become rare too!

Online Status: There’s no announcement on if/when online interactions will be shut down, so those modes are safe for now. You can still play your digital copy if you already own it.
