Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 Rated by the ESRB

A dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 rating for Minecraft has appeared on the ESRB website, adding the game to the growing list of third-party titles confirmed to be receiving native Switch 2 releases. While the Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft already runs on Switch 2 via backwards compatibility, a separate rating almost always signals a purpose-built version with new content or features.

What Could a Switch 2 Edition Actually Offer?

A dedicated Switch 2 edition of Minecraft would likely follow the precedent set by the Xbox and PlayStation versions, each of which received native upgrades with improved rendering, higher frame rates, and extended draw distances. On Switch 2, the most obvious improvements would be a locked 60fps in handheld mode, higher resolution textures, and larger render distances, none of which are achievable on the original hardware.

Mouse support is also a realistic addition. The Switch 2 mouse mode, built into the Joy-Con R, is a natural fit for Minecraft, where PC players have always benefitted from precise cursor control. Building, placing, and breaking blocks with mouse input could make the Switch 2 version feel notably closer to the PC experience than any console edition before it.

Free Upgrade or Paid Release?

This is the question most current Minecraft Switch owners will be asking. Mojang and Microsoft have previously offered free next-gen upgrades for Minecraft on other platforms, and there is a reasonable expectation that Switch 2 owners who already own the game would receive the same treatment. However, given that the Switch 2 version would likely be a separate SKU rather than a patch, it is also possible that it would be sold as a standalone release at a budget price, similar to how some third-party upgrades have been handled on the platform.

A physical edition for Switch 2 is almost certain given Minecraft’s retail presence. Past physical releases have often bundled bonus content, so a Switch 2 physical edition could reasonably include exclusive texture packs, mash-up packs, or a selection of Marketplace content to sweeten the deal for buyers.

New Collaboration Content?

Nintendo and Mojang have collaborated before, most notably with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, which remains one of the most beloved pieces of Minecraft DLC ever released. A Switch 2 edition would be a natural opportunity to revisit that partnership with something new. A Legend of Zelda mash-up, a Splatoon-themed pack, or a Donkey Kong world are all plausible, especially given Nintendo’s recent momentum with cross-brand collaborations. An Animal Crossing or Pikmin skin pack would also fit the tone of Minecraft’s audience.

With Summer Games Fest kicking off soon and credible rumours of a Nintendo Direct in June, an official announcement could come within days.
