Nintendo 3DS (Original)

Let’s begin with the original classic Nintendo 3DS, released in 2011. It featured impressive 3D screen technology that didn't require glasses. The system boasts a sturdy build, and I appreciate the unique extendable stylus. The gameplay experience is excellent and comfortable.

Presently, used systems can be found for up to $100. If you can get it for significantly cheaper, I’d recommend it, but go any higher and there are better systems worth getting.

Nintendo 3DS XL

Released in 2012, this model has a 90% larger screen. Although less portable, the expanded screen makes a noticeable difference. Despite the same resolution (making it slightly pixelated), the visual experience is great. Build quality significantly improved with rounded edges and better battery life.

Used systems range from $150 to $200. Prices have seen a notable increase recently.

Nintendo 2DS

Introduced in 2013 as a budget-friendly alternative for younger players, the 2DS removes the clamshell design and the 3D effect. Surprisingly, it still holds up! It offers a comfortable grip reminiscent of the Game Boy line. Used systems can be found for $50-$100, making it an excellent affordable entry point.

New Nintendo 3DS & New 3DS XL

Released between 2014-2015, these represent the new generation. The 'New' 3DS features swappable faceplates, while the XL is the larger variant. Both feature the C-Stick, faster loading times, and 'Super Stable 3D' which tracks your face to prevent the 3D effect from breaking.

These are the most expensive options (Standard: $200-300, XL: up to $500 for special editions), but offer the best performance and exclusive games like *Minecraft 3DS* and SNES Virtual Console.

New Nintendo 2DS XL

Launched in 2017, this model keeps the powerful internals of the 'New' line but removes the 3D effect. It features a sleek, stylish design with convenient SD card access (finally!). Prices range from $150 to $400. If you don't care about 3D, this is a fantastic choice.

Note on Custom Firmware: Systems from Japan can be cheaper, and you can swap the region with Homebrew. Links to guides are in the description.

The Verdict: Ranking the Consoles

  1. Nintendo 2DS: Affordable but lacks portability features.
  2. Nintendo 3DS: Aged well but small screens.
  3. Nintendo 3DS XL: Great, but lacks new features.
  4. New Nintendo 3DS: Great look, faceplates, and power.
  5. New Nintendo 2DS XL & New 3DS XL: The pinnacle of the family.

The **New Nintendo 3DS XL** tops the list with its large screen, enhanced 3D, and superior power. It remains my top recommendation for the ultimate experience.
