RUMOR: Nintendo Direct Now Reportedly Possible for June 9 as Summer Game Fest Week Heats Up

A June Nintendo Direct may be closer than expected, but the strongest rumour window has shifted from June 4 to June 9. Nash Weedle has been teasing a date that several outlets have connected to June 9, while Jeff Grubb has separately said he has been hearing about a Nintendo presentation by mid-June. Nintendo has not announced anything officially, so this should still be treated as rumour territory.

The June 9 timing makes more sense than June 4 right now. Summer Game Fest activity is already crowding the calendar, with major showcases running through the first week of June, including Summer Game Fest Live on June 5 and Xbox on June 7. Nintendo could technically still announce something for June 4, but with the week already packed and no official confirmation, that date now feels less likely.

If the rumour is accurate, June 9 would let Nintendo follow the Summer Game Fest wave rather than compete directly with it. That would give Switch 2 news its own lane while still keeping Nintendo inside the broader June showcase conversation.

What Could Be Announced

Several major titles have been circling rumour territory for weeks. Here is what the current chatter is pointing toward.

Ocarina of Time has been one of the most discussed Switch 2 expectations for months. Whether it arrives as a standalone remaster, an NSO expansion, or a full remake is unknown, but some form of Ocarina acknowledgement feels overdue.

Splatoon Raiders has been rumoured as a new Splatoon entry, possibly a spin-off with a different structure than the numbered mainline games. Given Splatoon 3’s lifecycle is winding down, a successor announcement makes sense.

Fire Emblem Fortune Weave has been circling in rumour space as the next mainline Fire Emblem entry. The series has been quiet since Engage, and a Direct would be the natural stage for a proper reveal.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Definitive Edition has appeared in enough places now that it feels close. XC2 is the only major Xenoblade title without a definitive release, and the Switch 2 upgrade momentum makes this a natural fit.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 on Switch 2 would be a crowd-pleaser, possibly with new content or GameShare support taking advantage of the hardware.

Nintendo Switch Online updates are also on the table. New system additions or Game Boy Advance expansions have been hinted at, and a Direct is the obvious venue for that kind of announcement.

Third-Party Surprises

Beyond first-party content, the third-party picture for Switch 2 is already shaping up to be strong. Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 was just rated by the ESRB this week. Genshin Impact has been a long-requested Switch port, and the hardware gap between Switch and Switch 2 makes a Switch 2 native release far more feasible now. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Devil May Cry 5, and Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition have all been mentioned in the same breath as upcoming Switch 2 announcements, pointing toward a platform that is pulling in serious third-party support.

NateTheHate’s comment about unannounced surprises suggests the Direct would not just be a confirmation parade. Something genuinely unexpected could be on the table.

If a June Direct lands on June 9, it would keep Nintendo in the middle of showcase season while giving the company room to dominate its own news cycle.

What About the Original Switch?

Following Rhythm Heaven Groove, there does not appear to be any further first-party Switch original content in the pipeline. Nintendo seems intent on winding down new development for the platform without officially declaring it dead, which puts the original Switch in an awkward middle ground heading into 2027.

The interesting comparison here is the 3DS and Switch crossover period. For a stretch, Nintendo released titles simultaneously across both platforms, keeping the older hardware relevant while building momentum on the new one. Could we see something similar with Switch and Switch 2? It is possible, but the hardware gap is significant enough that most meaningful new titles would be Switch 2 native.

The clearest signal will come from Pokemon. Pokemon Winds and Waves is currently targeting 2027, and if that launches as a Switch 2 exclusive, it would effectively mark the point of no return for the original hardware. A multiplatform Pokemon release would suggest Nintendo still sees value in supporting both systems together. A Switch 2 exclusive would not.

For now, third parties may continue releasing on original Switch where it makes sense, but first-party focus has clearly shifted. If this June Direct is as stacked as the rumours suggest, expect almost everything shown to be Switch 2.
