The Ultimate Wii Modding Entry Point

Installing the Homebrew Channel (HBC) is the first and most important step in unlocking your Wii’s full potential. It acts as a launcher for unofficial software, custom games, and powerful system tools. This guide covers the two most reliable methods: str2hax and LetterBomb.

Method 1: str2hax (No SD Card Required)

The fastest method if you have a stable internet connection. It exploits the Wii’s User Agreement screen.

  1. Go to Wii Settings → Internet → Connection Settings.
  2. Select your active connection and click Change Settings.
  3. Scroll to Auto-Obtain DNS and select No.
  4. Enter: Primary: 97.74.103.14 | Secondary: 173.201.71.14
  5. Save settings and run a connection test.
  6. Go to User Agreements and click Yes. The HackMii installer will load!

Method 2: LetterBomb (SD Card Required)

Recommended for a more stable, offline-capable installation.

  1. Find your MAC address in Wii Settings → Internet → Console Information.
  2. Visit please.hackmii.com on your PC.
  3. Enter your MAC address, check “Bundle the HackMii Installer for me!”, and cut either wire.
  4. Extract the ZIP to the root of your FAT32 SD card.
  5. Insert the card, go to the Wii Message Board, and navigate back until you see a red envelope. Click it!

The HackMii Installer

Once the installer loads, wait for the ‘Press 1 to continue’ prompt. Install the Homebrew Channel and, if possible, BootMii. BootMii is critical for brick protection!

You’re Done!

Your Wii is now ready for homebrew apps, emulators, and backups. Check out the full video for a visual walkthrough.
