The Tomodachi Life Demo Has a Genius Way of Shutting Itself Down

Nintendo dropped a free demo for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream ahead of its April 16 launch, and people are already having a blast creating chaotic Miis and throwing them into ridiculous island situations. But there is a catch – and it is one of the more on-brand ways Nintendo has ever handled demo limits.

Push far enough into the demo, and your Miis will lock themselves in their apartments and refuse to come out. Instead of their usual antics, they will just robotically repeat one message: buy the full game.

How It Happens

The trigger is surprisingly specific. At a certain point in the demo, you are prompted to create a third Mii. Once you do, it sets off a chain: you build a clothing store, your Miis all get dressed up – and then they become housebound advertising drones. The community has started calling it the Mii lobotomy.

Multiple players have shared clips of the moment it kicks in, and it is equal parts funny and sadly relatable. One moment they are living their best island lives. The next, they are all staring blankly and murmuring about the Nintendo eShop.

The Workaround

There is a way to keep playing indefinitely: simply do not create the third Mii. Stay at two and the demo has no time limit or progression wall. The trade-off is you will be stuck with only two Miis and no clothing store for the next few weeks until the full game drops.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launches on April 16, 2026 for Nintendo Switch. The demo is available now on the Nintendo eShop – just maybe think twice before opening that clothing store.
